Project Description

Overview

Rensselaer Commercial Properties is a third generation family-owned, Women Business Enterprise Certified commercial land development firm based in Northern New Jersey–just 25 miles from New York City. RCP owns and manages a diverse portfolio of commercial properties including office, recreational and flex spaces, self-storage and rural land.  RCP provides high-quality spaces and service to support businesses to grow and thrive.  RCP is a forward-thinking company that is concerned with sustainability and is constantly seeking opportunities to provide value to its tenants.  RCP recently invested in rooftop solar at its facility at 10 Plog Road in Fairfield, NJ.

Challenges

In order to offset the tenant’s annual usage with solar, it was necessary to combine the 5 electrical services that served the building into a single account/meter.  In NJ, a solar array can only service one electric meter so in order to offset the building’s entire usage (aggregate usage from all 5 meters) it would be necessary to combine the 5 electric services into one single account/meter.

Solution

Our roofing partner installed a new energy efficient membrane roofing system.  The combining of electric services required considerable coordination with PSE&G, the local electric utility.  ECS installed a 242.2 kW ballasted solar system that offsets 90% of the tenant’s full annual usage.

Benefits

RCP’s 10 Plog Road facility is now energy independent as the solar array offsets 90% of the tenant’s annual electric consumption. RCP’s tenants can promote the fact that the products they create are manufactured with Green energy.
